Retail business security is a pretty tough job. The problem is that you have to use a delicate touch. Most of the work is actually making it not worth it for crooks to steal. You see, you can’t act as a police force even in your own store. Even if a retail security guard see someone shoplifting, he does not necessarily have the right to stop them. A person can usually leave the store without being touched. The most the guard can do is warn them and call the police. If the retail security guard goes any further, he might be violating the person’s constitutional right. I have even met some security retail professionals who have been busted for trying to tackle shoplifters. The shoplifters can sue them for thousands of dollars, even if they were stealing when the security guard tackles them! Make sure that none of your security people try to be ?heroes?. It is not worth it!
Because of this, the most important thing about retail security is preventing people from breaking the law in the first place. It should not be about catching crooks, but about stopping them from stealing. The more obvious you make it that you’re watching them, the less likely they are to steal. Posting a security guard by the door, of course, is always a good idea. Would-be criminals will think twice when they see a big, beefy man standing there, calmly looking at them and surveying the rest of the store. Security cameras are also important. If you do need to prosecute someone for theft, they give you invaluable evidence. Without them, it can be almost impossible to prove your case.
Of course, one of the very most important devices you can use in your business is security tags. Putting the right security labels on your products can make retail security much more effective. Although most of these retail security tags can be removed by an expert, they are pretty solidly built and hard to get off. You can either use big bulky ones, or small hidden ones. Either way, if the perpetrator doesn’t manage to pry them off the product, the RFID chip will set off a security alarm on the way out of the door. When this happens, you’ll know that they’ve stolen something. You can stop them, call the cops, or simply convince them to give it back. Either way, you have done your job.
