With the way that the economy is, it is no surprise to see that the job market is so difficult to navigate. More and more people are either out of work, or filling in their income with temporary positions and are out looking for a job more befitting them. Either way, it is more important than ever to have a great resume. Tips for making a great resume seem to be everywhere and contradictory. If you follow my resume tips, I think you will soon see yourself employed.
The most important of any of the resume tips is that your work or employment history is the place where your resume will or will not stand out. Having a good looking employment history on your resume will allow your skills and qualifications to shine; essentially, this is where you can detail what a great addition you would be to the staff of your prospective company. The key here is to be specific and selective. You want to give a comprehensive picture of your workday without bogging it down with minutia. If you have statistical figures that can correspond to your job performance, such as an increase in sales, efficiency or productivity, this is definitely the place to put it. Do not be shy about yourself; if it feels like bragging, do it.
A lot of resume tips focus on the formatting of your resume. While it is certainly important to have a clean looking and professional document, I would not spend too much time worrying about how the piece of paper actually looks. Most job recruiters have trained themselves to ignore the presentation and focus on the details.
Finally, one of my favorite resume tips is to include an objective or a mission statement. This is simply a coherent and concise statement of two or three lines that states who you are (example: results-focused account executive) and what position you are seeking. This is attractive to job recruiters because, even if their position is not exactly a perfect fit, they admire the directness and goal-orientation. More important than finding the perfect fit is finding a great employee and a good objective makes you appear to be the great employee you probably are.
If you still need help with your resume building, I would recommend hiring a professional resume writer. These professionals are full of resume tips and advice and can completely construct your resume for a minor fee. Better to think of it as an investment, in yourself, as an employee. You will quickly earn that money back with your new, higher-paying position; it is well worth it.
